A man taught me
how to gut a fish
while my mother was inside
cleaning his house.
I don’t remember the blood,
only the cornsilk-colored eggs
he scooped out
with a glittering silver spoon
and the fried flesh melting
in my mouth
that night, becoming
a part of me.
