Valerie Stoyva was born in San Francisco and grew up in Boulder, Colorado, where she lives with her family in an old Boulder neighborhood. She obtained a graduate degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, lived in Turkey for four years, and works in early childhood education.
